Data security when outsourcing to Pakistan: what to ask your provider

Your data risk depends far more on how access is set up than on which country the work happens in. These are the questions that matter.

Clients considering offshore staff often ask whether outsourcing to Pakistan is “safe”. The honest answer is that security comes from controls, not geography. A well-run remote team on your systems, with your access policies, is usually lower risk than a freelancer on a personal laptop anywhere in the world. Here are the questions to ask any provider, including us.

Access

  1. Whose systems does the work happen in? The safest setup is your own tools and accounts, so you control access and can revoke it instantly.
  2. Is multi-factor authentication enforced? It should be on every account the hire uses.
  3. Is access least-privilege? A bookkeeper needs the ledger, not the whole drive.

People and contracts

  1. Does each staff member sign a confidentiality agreement with the provider, and can you add your own NDA?
  2. Is the person employed by the provider, or a subcontracted freelancer? Direct employment means clear accountability.
  3. What background checks are done before hiring?

Workplace and devices

  1. Is the work done from a supervised office or from home? Ask about USB, printing and personal-phone policies.
  2. Who owns and manages the device? Company-managed machines with updates, antivirus and disk encryption are the standard to expect.

Compliance and exit

  1. If you're in the UK or EU, how is GDPR handled? Personal data processed outside the UK/EEA needs a lawful transfer mechanism, typically standard contractual clauses in your agreement with the provider. Ask for them.
  2. What happens on the last day? Accounts revoked the same day, devices wiped, and confirmation in writing.
